Essential considerations for Laboratory dilutions

Dilutions play an important role in laboratories. The required accuracy depends on the purpose for which dilution is to be carried out. Simple school/ graduate level dilutions can be carried out using graduated measuring cylinders and pipettes. However, very low level determinations require use of precision devices such as micropipettes. For high level precision levels […]

Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR)- a versatile FT-IR sampling tool

FT-IR Spectroscopy is an acknowledged tool for identification and characterization of materials on the basis of presence of functional groups present. The technique has been abundantly used for analysis of solids, liquids and gaseous samples. However, in most cases some sample treatment becomes necessary to get meaningful results. Traditionally liquids and solids have been analyzed […]

Advantages of direct solid sampling in Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy

Ever since its introduction as a versatile technique for trace metal analysis Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy has utilized liquid sample introduction as universally accepted mode of sample introduction. This mode supports analysis using both flame and graphite furnace atomization techniques. Slurry sampling gained popularity with monitoring and control of manufacturing processes. However, it was accompanied with […]

Influence of changes in operational conditions on Gas Chromatograms

Gas Chromatography contributes significantly in testing and quality control laboratories in petrochemicals and fuels, foods, pharmaceuticals, flavours and fragrances and cosmetics industries. The technique offers high sensitivity and even minor changes in operational conditions have a marked bearing on chromatographic outputs. Such changes can lead to misleading interpretations and conclusions based on observations. The article […]

Systematic stepwise training approach for testing laboratories

Learning is an on-going process. No individual can claim that he knows everything and there is nothing more left to be learnt. It goes without saying that each day we are gaining something or the other new through observation, reading, internet surfing, discussions with friends, family members and colleagues or through organized training programs. Training […]

A sustained career growth requires a will to give your best and willingness to accept assigned responsibilities. Your […]

Commonly used Colour Measurement Scales

Colour measurements are the basis of several quantitative estimations and are based on light absorbance by the coloured medium. In addition to absorption several methods make use of colour filters for visual matching of colours. The basis of colour of different materials was discussed earlier. Now a question arises can colour be measured and what […]

Suggested Step-wise approach for training on Sophisticated Analytical Instruments

Age old Classical analysis techniques are being replaced by modern sophisticated instrumental analysis techniques in laboratories across the world. In order to use such instruments to their optimum capacity structured training is essential. A new joinee in a laboratory, especially one fresh from university, has high ambitions and is keen to acquire knowledge about the organization, […]
