Selection of Cell materials for UV – VIS spectroscopic studies

A cuvette is the sample-holding vessel used in UV-Vis spectroscopic studies, available in glass, quartz, or transparent plastic and in designs sized from microliter to several-milliliter volumes, with the material chosen based on the sample’s nature, the absorbance range required, and its inertness toward the sample.

Cuvettes are available in different designs to accommodate sample volumes ranging from micro-liters to a few ml. These are generally made from glass, quartz and transparent plastics. Both glass and quartz cuvettes are fragile and require care in handling and use. Plastics are more durable but have their own limitations. The choice of material depends on nature of sample, absorbance range and inertness of material towards sample.
